How it works

Split any list into random, fair teams

Picking teams by hand is slow and rarely feels fair to whoever gets picked last. This tool exists for the dozens of everyday moments that need a quick, unbiased split — gym class, a rec league sign-up sheet, an office icebreaker, a classroom group project, a trivia night, a family game. Paste your names, pick how you want them divided, and get a result in under a second — no spreadsheet, no drawing names from a hat, no accusations of favoritism.

How the shuffle works

Every name in your list gets an equal, independent chance of landing in any position before the list is divided into teams. That's the whole fairness guarantee — there's no hidden weighting toward names entered first or last, and no bias based on list length. If you don't like a particular split, hit re-shuffle for a brand-new random arrangement without retyping your list.

You can divide two ways. By number of teams splits your list as evenly as possible across however many teams you specify — a list that doesn't divide evenly spreads the extra people one-per-team rather than dumping them all on the last group. By team size instead fixes how many people go on each team and works out how many teams that produces, with any leftover people forming a smaller final team.

When to use balance mode

Pure random splits are the fairest option when everyone's roughly equal, but for something like a pickup basketball game or a classroom project where skill or experience varies a lot, a purely random draw can accidentally stack one team. Balance mode fixes that: tag each name with a rough rating from 1–10 (e.g. "Alice:8"), and the tool distributes people so each team's total rating lands as close to even as possible, instead of leaving it to chance. Names without a rating are treated as average so they don't skew the split — you don't have to rate everyone for balance mode to still help. Balance mode only applies when splitting by number of teams, since a fixed team size already determines exactly how many people land on each team.

Disclaimer

This is a general-purpose randomizer — it has no connection to any specific league, school, or organization's official team assignment process, and skill ratings you enter are whatever you decide they mean. Nothing you type here is saved or sent anywhere; the shuffle runs entirely in your browser.
