Tips to reduce your moving cost
- 1Book 4–8 weeks early. Last-minute bookings cost 20–40% more. Peak season (May–September) fills up fast.
- 2Move mid-week or mid-month. Saturday and month-end moves are the most expensive. Tuesday–Thursday rates are often 15–25% lower.
- 3Pack yourself. DIY packing saves $200–$1,900 depending on home size. Start 3–4 weeks out so it's not rushed.
- 4Declutter before you move. Fewer items = fewer hours for local moves and lower weight-based fees for long-distance moves.
- 5Get at least 3 binding quotes. Non-binding estimates let movers raise the price on delivery. Insist on a binding or not-to-exceed quote.
Field guide
What does it really cost to move in 2026?
Moving costs vary enormously depending on how much you own, how far you are going, and how much help you hire. The average local move in the United States costs between $800 and $2,500. A long-distance move typically runs $2,000–$7,500. Cross-country moves can easily reach $10,000–$18,000 for a large home. This calculator helps you build a realistic budget before you start calling companies.
How local moves are priced
Local moves (under 50 miles) are almost always priced hourly. You pay for a team of movers — typically two people — plus a truck. The hourly rate in most US cities ranges from $100 to $160 for a standard two-person crew. Rates are higher in New York, San Francisco, and Boston; lower in smaller cities and rural areas.
The total bill depends primarily on how many hours the move takes. A studio apartment typically takes 2–4 hours; a two-bedroom home takes 4–8 hours; a four-bedroom house can easily require a full day. Stairs, long hallways, and bulky furniture all add time.
How long-distance moves are priced
Long-distance and cross-country moves switch from an hourly model to a weight-and-distance model. Moving companies weigh your shipment (usually at the origin and again after loading) and multiply that weight by a per-mile rate. A typical household shipment for a two-bedroom home weighs 5,000–8,000 lbs.
For long-distance moves, the cost breakdown is roughly:
- Labor (~38%): Loading and unloading at both ends, disassembly/reassembly of furniture.
- Freight/transport (~52%): Fuel, truck depreciation, and the driver's time over the route.
- Insurance (~10%): Basic valuation coverage at $0.60 per lb is legally required; full replacement value (recommended) costs more.
Stairs vs. elevator
Stairs add time and physical strain for movers. For local moves, most companies add a "flight charge" of $50–$100 per flight of stairs, or simply take longer (resulting in a higher hourly bill). For long-distance moves, stair charges are typically a flat fee of $75–$150 per flight at origin and destination. Our calculator applies a 20% labor uplift for local stair moves and a flat surcharge for long-distance moves.
What the add-ons cover
Three common add-ons significantly change your total bill:
- Packing service: Professional packers will box, wrap, and label everything in your home. This typically adds $150–$1,900 depending on home size and is the single biggest variable add-on. If you are time-pressed, it can be worth it; if you are budget-conscious, packing yourself is the fastest way to cut costs.
- Specialty items: Items like grand pianos, pool tables, large artwork, gun safes, and antique furniture require specialised handling — custom crating, extra crew, or specialist lift equipment. Expect to pay $200–$600 per specialty item.
- Storage: If your new home is not ready on move day, movers can place your belongings in storage. Climate- controlled units typically cost $100–$310 per month. Some moving companies offer 30 days free as part of their long-distance packages — always ask.
Hidden costs to budget for
The items below are not always included in a standard moving quote but can add meaningful cost:
- Packing materials: Boxes, tape, bubble wrap, and mattress covers. Even for a small apartment, expect to spend $30–$90 on supplies if packing yourself.
- Disassembly/reassembly: IKEA beds, large wardrobes, and sectional sofas often need to be broken down. Many movers include basic disassembly; others charge $25–$50 per item.
- Elevator or parking fees: In apartments and condos, you may need to reserve a freight elevator or pay a building move-in fee ($100–$500). In cities, movers may charge for parking permits or congestion-zone fees.
- Tip: Tipping movers is customary. A typical tip is $20–$50 per mover for a local move; $50–$100 per mover for a long-distance move. Budget this separately.
When is the cheapest time to move?
Demand drives moving prices as much as distance. The most expensive times to move:
- Summer (June–August): School year end, lease renewals, and good weather push demand to its peak. Prices are 15–30% higher than off-peak.
- Weekends: Saturday especially. Most lease agreements start on the 1st or 15th, creating surges.
- Month-end (last 5 days): Lease expirations cluster here. Availability is lowest and prices peak.
To save money, target a Tuesday–Thursday move in September–April. Booking 4–8 weeks in advance also unlocks the best rates and ensures your preferred company and date are available.
