Astrology primer
The twelve signs, four elements, and three modalities explained.
How zodiac signs work
The zodiac is a band of sky divided into twelve equal segments of 30 degrees each, tracing the apparent path of the Sun as seen from Earth over the course of one year. Western astrology assigns each segment a name and symbol derived from the constellation historically associated with that region of sky — though due to Earth's axial precession, the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology no longer aligns with the actual star positions.
Your sun sign (what this calculator determines) is the zodiac constellation the Sun was passing through on your birthday. It is the most widely known aspect of a natal chart and is associated with your core identity, ego, and conscious self-expression.
The four elements
Each of the twelve signs belongs to one of four classical elements:
- Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): Enthusiastic, dynamic, and action-oriented. Fire signs lead with passion and inspiration. They are energetic and optimistic, though they can burn hot and exhaust themselves.
- Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): Grounded, practical, and reliable. Earth signs build lasting things and take the long view. They are patient and sensual, though they can become rigid in routine.
- Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): Intellectual, communicative, and social. Air signs live in the realm of ideas and connections. They are adaptable and curious, though they can become detached or scattered.
- Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): Intuitive, emotional, and empathetic. Water signs feel deeply and absorb the emotional atmosphere around them. They are imaginative and perceptive, though they can be overwhelmed by intensity.
The three modalities
Each sign also has a modality describing its mode of action:
- Cardinal (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn): Initiators. Cardinal signs start new cycles — they begin each of the four seasons. They are driven and ambitious, best at launching ideas and projects.
- Fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius): Sustainers. Fixed signs occupy the middle of each season. They are persistent and determined, best at seeing things through to completion.
- Mutable (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces): Adapters. Mutable signs end each season, preparing for the transition to the next. They are flexible and resourceful, best at synthesising and finishing.
Ruling planets
In traditional astrology, each sign is governed by a planetary ruler that colours its expression. Classical rulerships (pre-telescopic) assigned each of the seven visible planets to one or two signs. Modern astrologers added the three outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) as additional rulers for Aquarius, Pisces, and Scorpio respectively.
Sun, Moon, and Rising: the big three
Your sun sign is the starting point, but a complete astrological portrait requires three key placements:
- Sun sign: Core identity. How you fundamentally are. What drives you consciously.
- Moon sign: Emotional world. How you feel, react, and nurture. Your inner life.
- Rising sign (Ascendant): First impression. How others initially perceive you. The lens through which your sun expresses itself.
Many people who feel their sun sign doesn't fit them are actually strongly influenced by a different moon or rising sign — or have a sun in the very first or last degrees of a sign (near a cusp).
