The Big Three, explained.

In astrology, your Big Three are the three most personal points in your chart: your Sun sign, your Moon sign, and your Rising sign (also called the Ascendant). Your Sun sign alone — the one everyone knows — is only a third of the story. Knowing all three is the quickest way to a richer, more accurate sketch of your personality.

Sun sign — your core self

The Sun represents your essential identity, your ego, and the qualities you're here to grow into. It's determined purely by your birth date, since the Sun spends about a month in each sign. When someone asks “what's your sign?”, this is the answer they mean.

Moon sign — your emotional world

The Moon governs your inner life: your feelings, instincts, and what makes you feel safe and cared for. The Moon races through the zodiac, changing signs every two to three days, so two people born on the same day can have very different Moon signs. It's the private self you show to the people closest to you.

Rising sign — your outer persona

The Rising sign, or Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the exact moment you were born. It colours your outward style, your instinctive reactions, and the first impression you make. Because the horizon shifts quickly, the Rising sign changes about every two hours — which is why your birth time matters so much.

How this calculator works

Calculating a true chart requires planetary ephemeris data and your precise birth coordinates. This tool uses fast, well-known approximations instead:

Sun

Read directly from your birth month and day using the standard tropical zodiac date ranges — this part is exact.

Rising (Ascendant)

We assume the Ascendant equals your Sun sign at roughly 6 AM (sunrise), then advance one sign for every two hours of clock time:

So a sunrise birth shows a Rising that matches the Sun; born six hours later, the Ascendant has advanced three signs.

Moon

The Moon completes the zodiac in about 27.32 days (~13.2° per day). We measure the days elapsed from a fixed reference point — the Moon at 0° Aries on 1 January 2000, 18:00 UTC — and map the remainder onto the twelve 30° signs.
