Will school be closed tomorrow?
Nobody can actually answer that except your school district — this calculator can't either. What it can do is turn the same kind of forecast numbers districts look at into a fun percentage, so you (or your kids) have something more satisfying than staring at a radar map at 9pm. Treat the score the way you'd treat a magic 8-ball with a weather degree: entertaining, loosely grounded in real factors, and never a substitute for the actual call.
What actually goes into a real snow day decision
Superintendents weigh a mix of hard data and local judgment: forecasted snowfall and its timing (overnight snow that stops before the morning commute is very different from snow still falling at 6am), road conditions and how quickly plows can clear bus routes, temperature and wind chill for kids waiting at bus stops, and — often underrated — the district's own track record. A district with hilly, rural routes and a thin snow-removal budget will close for storms that a flat, well-equipped urban district shrugs off entirely. That's why two schools twenty miles apart can make opposite calls on the same storm.
How this calculator scores it
Snowfall does most of the work. The score follows a curve that stays low under an inch, climbs steeply between roughly 2" and 8", and levels off near the top for anything beyond that — mirroring how an extra inch matters a lot more going from 2" to 4" than it does going from 10" to 12". On top of that, an overnight low under 15°F adds points for ice risk, and wind at 25 mph or higher adds more for blowing/drifting snow and dangerous wind chill at bus stops. Weekends and holidays are scored as not applicable, since there's no school to close in the first place. Finally, your answer to "how easily does your district close" scales the whole score up or down — the same forecast can land very differently depending on that local tendency.
None of this is calibrated against real closure data or connected to any actual district's system — it's an illustrative model, not a prediction engine. The honest version of this tool's job is to be a fun companion to your evening spent refreshing the weather app, not a replacement for it.
Tips while you wait for the call
- Most districts announce by 5–6am, sometimes the night before for a high-confidence storm — check your district's actual notification method (app, text alert, local news) rather than just this page.
- Lay out snow gear the night before — boots, gloves, and a hat by the door make a 6am scramble much easier either way.
- If your area gets 2-hour delays more often than full closures, check whether your district uses those as a middle option — this calculator only scores full closure likelihood.
- Local news and district social media accounts are usually faster than district websites for real-time closure updates.
