Field guide

Texas’s sales tax, explained.

Texas has no state income tax, which puts more fiscal weight on sales tax as a revenue source. The state base rate is 6.25%, and cities, counties, transit authorities, and special-purpose districts can add their own local sales tax on top of that.

Texas caps the combined rate — most states don't

Unlike California's uncapped local district taxes, Texas law limits the combined total of all local sales taxes to 2% on top of the state's 6.25%. That makes 8.25% the legal maximum combined sales tax rate anywhere in the state — most large Texas cities, including Houston, sit right at that ceiling.

Areas outside any city limits sometimes land below 8.25%, since only county and applicable special-district taxes apply there with no city levy on top.

Worked example

Say you make a $200 furniture purchase at Texas’s 6.25% state base rate. The tax comes to $12.50, for a total of $212.50$200.00 pre-tax plus $12.50 in tax. Use the calculator above to re-run this at your actual combined (state + local) rate if it differs.

Disclaimer

The rate above is Texas’s 2026 state base rate and updates slowly; combined state + local rates change more often and vary by county or city. For tax filings or large purchases, confirm the exact combined rate with Texas’s Department of Revenue or an up-to-date ZIP-code lookup.
