Field guide
Florida’s sales tax, explained.
Florida has no state income tax, so its 6% statewide sales tax rate is a core piece of how the state funds itself. On top of the state rate, individual counties can add their own “discretionary sales surtax,” which is where most of the variation between Florida counties comes from.
Florida's county surtax has a built-in cap
County discretionary surtaxes in Florida typically run 0.5%–1.5%, with a handful of counties reaching higher — but the surtax doesn't apply without limit. It's only charged on the first $5,000 of a single item's sales price; any amount above $5,000 on that item is exempt from the surtax (though the 6% state rate still applies to the full price).
Worked example
Say you make an $85 retail purchase at Florida’s 6% state base rate. The tax comes to $5.10, for a total of $90.10 — $85.00 pre-tax plus $5.10 in tax. Use the calculator above to re-run this at your actual combined (state + local) rate if it differs.
Disclaimer
The rate above is Florida’s 2026 state base rate and updates slowly; combined state + local rates change more often and vary by county or city. For tax filings or large purchases, confirm the exact combined rate with Florida’s Department of Revenue or an up-to-date ZIP-code lookup.
Florida's 6% state base sales tax rate is set by state law and subject to change. Rates, thresholds, and formulas are checked against Florida Department of Revenue and updated when the underlying rules change.
