Field guide

California’s sales tax, explained.

California's 7.25% statewide base sales tax rate is the highest of any state in the country. It's a floor, not a ceiling: cities and counties layer additional “district taxes” on top, so 7.25% is what you'll actually pay only in the relatively small number of jurisdictions that haven't added a local measure.

Why some California cities pay a lot more than 7.25%

District taxes typically add 0.25%–1.5% each, and a city or county can stack multiple measures at once. As of early 2026, Lancaster and Palmdale sit at the state's highest combined rate, 11.25%, while plenty of smaller jurisdictions remain right at the 7.25% floor with no local add-on at all.

That range — 7.25% to 11.25% depending on address — is why the calculator above defaults to the state base rate and lets you type in a higher combined rate if you have an actual receipt or ZIP code to match.

Worked example

Say you make a $150 electronics purchase at California’s 7.25% state base rate. The tax comes to $10.88, for a total of $160.88$150.00 pre-tax plus $10.88 in tax. Use the calculator above to re-run this at your actual combined (state + local) rate if it differs.

Disclaimer

The rate above is California’s 2026 state base rate and updates slowly; combined state + local rates change more often and vary by county or city. For tax filings or large purchases, confirm the exact combined rate with California’s Department of Revenue or an up-to-date ZIP-code lookup.
