How much does Etsy actually take?
Most Etsy sellers price their listings around the number they want to see land in their bank account, then get quietly surprised at how much smaller that number turns out to be. Etsy charges four separate fees on a typical sale, and one of the easiest mistakes is forgetting that the biggest of those — the transaction fee — is charged on your shipping and add-ons too, not just the item price. Once you add payment processing on top, it's common for total fees to eat 10–13% of what the buyer actually pays, before you've subtracted a cent of materials or labor.
The fees on every sale
- Listing fee: $0.20 per item, charged when a listing goes live (and again each time it renews)
- Transaction fee: 6.5% of the full amount the buyer pays — item price, shipping, gift wrap, and personalization combined
- Payment processing fee: 3% + $0.25 per order, at Etsy's US rate (other countries have their own published rate)
- Offsite Ads fee: 15% or 12%, only on sales Etsy attributes to one of its own off-site ads — see below
A worked example
Say you sell one item for $25 with $5 shipping — a $30 order, no extras, no Offsite Ads. The listing fee is $0.20. The transaction fee is 6.5% of $30, or $1.95. Payment processing is 3% of $30 plus $0.25, or $1.15. Total fees: $3.30 — about 11% of the order. That leaves $26.70 before you subtract what the item actually cost you to make. If your materials and labor ran $8, your real profit on that sale is $18.70, a 62% margin — a very different number from the $25 sticker price most sellers mentally bank on.
Offsite Ads: opt-in vs. mandatory
Etsy runs ads for your listings on Google, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Bing, and only charges you when one of those ads actually leads to a sale. The rate depends on your shop's size: if your shop did under $10,000 in sales over the trailing 12 months, Offsite Ads is opt-in and you can turn it off entirely — but if you leave it on, attributed sales are charged 15%. Once a shop crosses $10,000 in trailing-12-month sales, participation becomes mandatory and the rate drops to 12% on attributed sales — you can no longer opt out, but the fee itself is lower. Either way, the fee only applies to the specific orders Etsy's system credits to one of its ads, not your whole shop's revenue.
Pricing for a real profit margin
The fastest way to price sustainably on Etsy is to work backward from the margin you actually need, not the price that feels competitive. Add up materials, labor, and packaging per item, then use this calculator to test a price until net profit clears your target — most experienced sellers aim for at least a 30–40% margin after all Etsy fees, since that buffer absorbs the inevitable slow months, returns, and the temptation to run sales. Building your shipping price into the item price (or vice versa) doesn't change your total fees either way, since the transaction fee applies to the combined total — but it can affect how your listing compares in search, where buyers often filter or sort by displayed price.

This calculator uses Etsy's published fee schedule as of today for illustrative purposes. Etsy can change listing, transaction, payment-processing, and Offsite Ads rates at any time, and payment processing specifically varies by the seller's country.
